Baby Turtle Rescue

Baby Turtle Rescue

Today i had some time left so i decided to visit the Patriot Place Trail in Foxboro Ma. I managed some nice photos including some fairly big turtles - of course most did not come out well. Because it was near lunch and i was starved i headed back to my car in the gravel parking lot. It is some ways from the water and as i was walking into the lot something caught my eye. I got down on my knees and was shocked to see a baby snapping turtle. i quickly picked him up and put him in a cup and then noticed another one a few feet away. They were not moving much and seemed exhausted. I then walked all the way back to the water and put them down at the waters edge and walked back again and started looking around. Within ten minutes i had collected seventeen more! I brought all those back to the water and headed back to the lot yet again.

I only found one more and i noticed this one had been run over by a car just recently and was bleeding from the head and was not well. Even though i believe he was not going to make it i brought him back to the water and placed him on the edge of the pond. By that time all the other baby turtles had managed to swim out into the pond and begin there new life.

I was very happy to help these babies and because of the distance and many big obstacles just to get to the edge of the pond i do not think they would have made it alone. I also was a bit depressed by the injured baby turtle too but there was nothing i could do to help him except get him to the water and hope for the best!

Info:

Snapping turtles are fascinating animals, and captives are relatively hardy with proper care. However, the large size, long life, and aggressive nature of this species deserve serious consideration.

Size: The carapace length of common snappers frequently exceeds one foot with a record length of 18 ? inches (Pritchard). The average adult weight is thirty pounds, but 40-60 pounders are not uncommon (Dillon). Snappers grow fast! That 2-inch baby you brought home to a ten-gallon aquarium can be 4 inches in one year and 8 inches in two. It will eventually require either a pond setting or a gigantic aquarium (more than a hundred gallons).

Messiness: Snappers are both voracious eaters and highly aquatic. This combination equals frequent water changes! The best filtration cannot keep up with smelly snapper wastes. You must be prepared to do complete water changes at least once a week if not more often.

Aesthetics: If you want a beautiful tank landscaped with plants, you do not want a snapper! Your little charge will rearrange the tank to his or her liking, uprooting plants and pushing everything including rocks and the filter into new positions. Snapper tanks must be kept simple. Expense: The initial investment for any turtle amounts to several hundred dollars for a tank, filter, heater, UVB lighting, and a basking light. Larger tanks and equipment for your eventual "behemoth" will cost much more.

Aggressiveness: Yes, it's true that snappers are more docile in their aquatic environment than on land. They sit quietly and give you long soulful stares - hungry stares!!! Snappers will eat anything including your fingers! They charge their food, and your digits can easily be mistaken for worms in a feeding frenzy. You cannot mix them with other turtles including other snappers. Even small snappers can cause serious harm to each other. They will also attempt to eat all the other inhabitants of your prized outdoor pond, including ducks and ornamental fish.

Longevity: The life span of the common snapper has been estimated at 30-40 years (Dillon). Are you prepared to commit one third to one half of your life to your friend? What if you move? If you are thinking you can just release your turtle in a few years, remember that most states still permit the harvesting of snappers. You wouldn't want your buddy to end up in a can of soup! And zoos are "full up" with unwanted snappers and other reptiles. Most are no longer accepting ex-pets.

Diesel Fuel Filter Water Separator

diesel fuel filter water separator

    water separator
  • A device found on diesel cars which removes any water that may have contaminated the diesel fuel.

  • A device that utilizes gravity to physically separate water that has become mixed with the drycleaning solvent. Water separators are found on stills, dryers, muck cookers and vapor recovery units. They prevent the water from returning with the solvent to the solvent storage tank.

  • A device used on Diesel Engines that separates water from the fuel.

    diesel fuel
  • diesel oil: a heavy mineral oil used as fuel in diesel engines

  • A fuel composed of distillates obtained in petroleum refining operation or blends of such distillates with residual oil used in motor vehicles. The boiling point and specific gravity are higher for diesel fuels than for gasoline.

  • Petroleum products normally used as fuel for diesel engines are components of crude oil having heavy hydrocarbons containing at least 12 to 16 carbon atoms per molecule. These heavier fractions are taken from crude oil after the more volatile portions used in gasoline are removed.

Here is the concrete foundation of the enrichment-plant, whose first part was built in 1906, but the service was at this stage only for a short period. An extension was made when production resumed 1915. In the enrichment-plant the copper ore was separated from the rest of the less valuable rocks and was delivered in pulviserad form of a copper-concentrate.
Simplified described it happened like this:
The broken ore is hoisted-up from the Kittelmine and then crushed into coarse-crushing plant. After crushing the ore was transported to the sorting plant where the less valuable rocks was rough-sorted out and was transported to a waste rock deposit west of the mining facility.
The remaining ore was crushed to finer bits, whereupon it passed the enrichment plants ball-mills, using small balls of flintstone grinding it down to a grain size of 1mm. To separate the copper mineral from the less valuable rocks a so-called water-separator was used. The extracted precious copper-concentrate was then transported to Guldsmedshyttan for further processing.

Electrostatic Filter Furnace

electrostatic filter furnace

    electrostatic filter
  • An electrostatic precipitator (ESP), or electrostatic air cleaner is a particulate collection device that removes particles from a flowing gas (such as air) using the force of an induced electrostatic charge.

  • For cleaning air, a type of filter which gives dust particles an electric charge. This causes particles to be attracted to a plate so they can be removed from air.

  • Filtration system using electrically charged plates and an electrically charged thread that will give a charge to the passing particles so these will be attracted by the plates.

    furnace
  • an enclosed chamber in which heat is produced to heat buildings, destroy refuse, smelt or refine ores, etc.

  • An appliance fired by gas, oil, or wood in which air or water is heated to be circulated throughout a building in a heating system

  • Used to describe a very hot place

  • Furnace is the first album released by the industrial music group Download. It was one of the first albums released with a lenticular cover. Their follow-up EP Microscopic also made use of this new type of packaging.

  • An enclosed structure in which material can be heated to very high temperatures, e.g., for smelting metals

  • A furnace is a device used for heating. The name derives from Latin fornax, oven. The earliest furnace was excavated at Balakot, a site of the Indus Valley Civilization, dating back to its mature phase (c. 2500-1900 BC). The furnace was most likely used for the manufacturing of ceramic objects.

Electrostatic Biodiesel

Electrostatic Biodiesel

Today I tried a rather dangerous experiment. I tossed a high voltage
power supply into a freshly mixed batch of biodiesel. There are videos
on you tube and discussions in forums on this topic. The goal is to
separate the glycerin and get it to the bottom of the container
faster. My small test cases from today show me that indeed high
voltage does offer a significantly faster reaction. The soap drops to
the bottom in minutes instead of hours when a high voltage charge is
applied. I'll post a video soon with more details. Has anyone else
experimented with this? The attached photo was taken 15 minutes after
mixing the methoxide with the filtered waste oil. On the left is the
bio + high voltage zapper on the right is the control (straight b100).

The Road Of 6

It's been a Road of 6 for Kat Maslich-Bode, as in six years, the time it's taken to complete her solo debut since parting in 2004 with Peter Bradley Adams, as the duo eastmountainsouth.
If you don't know Kat here's how she decribes herself - For those of you who don't already know me, my name is Kat Maslich Bode, formerly Kat Maslich, the female half of Eastmountainsouth. I grew up in Roanoke, Virginia and always had music around me. My twin Emmy and I are the youngest of five. I'm sure listening to my brother and sister's vinyl records had something to do with my love for music and vocalists. My mother, is a pianist who still plays regularly in my hometown church and my step-father s love for music and collecting instruments still influences me greatly. My grandparents used to live down the road from Ralph Stanley and I used to attend local bluegrass festivals as a young girl and would pass by his Clinch Mountain Boy's tour bus all the time. I witnessed amazing musicians who ate, drank and breathed this genre of music. The essence of Appalachia is ingrained in the fabric of my home state. In the early 90's I packed my bags and tried to find my place in music with short-lived stints in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, and Atlanta. In search of clarity, I always somehow gravitated back to Los Angeles where I felt the most comfortable in my skin. I had a chance meeting with Peter Bradley Adams for a television spot. He was one of the musical composers and I felt an instant connection. While the commercial never panned out a friend of Pete's brought him to a solo show of mine soon thereafter. As a result, I sang on a country demo he was working on, and we realized we shared similar musical tastes and songwriting styles. There was no denying the feeling of finally meeting a musical partner - someone who really understood me. We became eastmountainsouth.
In 2001, Kat and Peter Bradley Adams signed to Dreamworks Records. Over the next three years, eastmountainsouth would release a debut, climb radio charts with the single You Dance and tour the country with Lucinda Williams, Tracy Chapman, Joan Baez and Nelly Furtado amongst others before performing their last show at the Hollywood Bowl in September 2004 opening for Lyle Lovett and Shelby Lynne.
Soon after, Kat began writing some of the first material for The Road of Six, and in the time between married, moved to Nashville and became a mother.
This recording was a labor of love and literally almost six years in the making, recalls Kat. & I am truly blessed to have so many amazing friends, musicians and singers join me on the record.
The album is produced by Neilson Hubbard (Kim Richey, Strays Don't Sleep, Matthew Perryman Jones) and features guest vocals by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Glen Phillips, Luke Bulla and Jim Lauderdale.
Appropriately, The Road of 6 features six songs beginning with the highly personal March featuring guest vocals by the aforementioned Mary Chapin Carpenter. Kat recalls, I wrote this song for my husband on our wedding day. But, it's also special because our daughter's heartbeat in-utero begins and ends the song.
On Sky Falls and Back Home , Kat's warm, resonant vocals bring an uplifting and hopeful outlook to some darker subject matter depression and loss, respectively. And she also delicately breaths her own spirit into Tim Easton's J.P.M.F.YF. from his 2006 album Ammunition. It's considered by some to be a controversial song. But, in my opinion, I think the message is positive and moving.
